Notes for Daniel Avery Sr.
Daniel Avery, (1740-81), served as ensign under Col. William Ledyard and Capt Gallop Company commander. He lost his life at Fort Griswold, where Avery’s were killed or wounded and taken prisoner.

Daniel Avery (1740-81) was one of the heroes of “Groton Heights.” The inscription on his
tombstone reads, “In memory of Ensign Daniel Avery, who nobly sacrificed his life in defense of
the liberties of America at Fort Griswold.” He was born and died in Groton, Conn.
