Erastus E. Hussey.
At the time of his birth,1800, Ledyard was called the township of Scipio, (now Aurora) Cayuga County, New York. In 1800 that part of the State was an unbroken wilderness and roamed over by the aboriginal tribes of the Seneca, Cayuga and Onondaga Indians.
The area was then called "the lake country", and the garden of the State.
In those days school may have only been three months out of the year and was over by the time he was 14 years old. Erastus took advantage of the Union library situated in the villiage of Aurora about a mile from the farm he was raised on. He read every chance he had, history, travel and poetry. He studied scacred history as well as the beaties of Homer, Milton, Shakspeare, Ossian, etc.
He was poor but wanted to have his own farm. Land further west was less expensive. He had already visited his friends who lived in the Holland purchase in the south part of Erie County, New York. He did not like the county so he traveled to the deep woods of eastern Michigan in 1824 and choose his future home site. It was on the bounds of what is now Plymouth, in Wayne county. In July 1827 he and his wife went to settle, nine miles from the nearest inhabitants and fifteen miles from a public road.
In 1836 the Plymouth farm was sold and the family spent time with relitives and friends in New England, then settled permanently in Battle Creek in 1838.
In 1840 he became a station-master on the underground railroad in Battle Creek, MI. helping slaves escape to Canada. Without pay their home became a never-failing asylum for fleeing slaves.
