Notes for Ulrich Webrick "Orei" Houck
Came from Germany in 1832 with brother Michael. Came down the Erie Barge Canal to get to Eden. Land in Eden was given free to immigrants who would farm the land and Ulrich settled there.

Ulrich Hauck lived in the Town of Eden, Erie, NY

King Fredrick William III of Prussia caused a compulory union of the Reform and Lutheran churches. A break away sect of >1000 opposeds to union and known as Old Lutherans" emigrated to the USA in 1839. 700 to Milwaukee the rest to Buffalo.

However, the first wave of German immigration was the result of a desire for religious freedom. "Those are the Pomeranians; they came from Pomerania, which was part of Prussia, and arrived in 1839," explains Gerhard Rauscher.
The old Lutheran Pomeranians were unwilling to accept the king of Prussia's proclamation that the Lutheran and Calvinistic faiths should form one united church. The Pomeranians arrived in the Milwaukee area and founded Freistadt, "Free City-Free Town," now part of Mequon, where they felt that they could live according to their religious beliefs.
