MITCHELL, Alexander, financier, born near Ellon, Scotland, 18 October, 1817 ; died in New York city, 19 April, 1887. He was educated at the parish-schools of Aberdeenshire, and subsequently studied law, but after two years entered a banking-house in Peterhead. In 1839 he came to the United States and settled in Milwaukee

Ellon
A small market town, 15m north of Aberdeen. The ruins of Ellon Castle lie just north and east of the town. Birthplace of farmer's son, Alexander Mitchell (1817-1887), who emigrated to Milwaukee in 1839. He became Secretary and then President of the Wisconsin Marine and Fire Insurance Company (founded by fellow Scot, George Smith) which became a state bank. He was also a notable railroad builder who improved the Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad system, expanding its lines to 5,000 miles. He became the company's President in 1867. He was referred to as the "Best Known Scot in Milwaukee". He served two terms in Congress.
