Notes for William (Spouse 1)
William Furbish

William Furbish is as far as we know, the first immigrant with the Furbish name in this country. We
don't know too much about William, although we do have many facts concerning his life. These facts
and their sources are detailed below. William apparently came to the colonies from Scotland via
England in the 1640's.

Stackpole's Old Kittery and Her Families, prepared with the assistance of Frederick B. Furbish of
Cambridge, Massachusetts, reports that William died in 1701. However, the Genealogical Dictionary
of Maine and New Hampshire says that the "widow Christian" was subpoenaed as a witness in 1695.
This is also the same year that William's will is reported missing.

It would seem that as William's will was dated August 27, 1694 and reported missing in 1695 that he
most likely died in 1695. The will agreement happened six years after the will is reported missing and
that may be the basis for the year of his death.

Notes: Listed below are the known milestones in his life:

1648 - William was granted six yeckeres (acres) of land in Dover, New Hampshire June 16,
1648.
1659 - He was taxed in Dover, New Hampshire. 1664 He was settled on the family homestead
in the N. W. Corner of Eliot (40 rods on the river).
1667 - William and Daniel Ferguson bought 150 acres of land on the Piscataqua River (Deed
dated 28 February 1667).
1674 - Prosecuted in New Hampshire for getting Indians drunk.
1679 - Removed to New Hampshire.
1679 - Fined for abusing (and Rebecca for striking) a constable.
1679 - Signed a petition that recites purchase of Maine but complains that Massachusetts is
suppressing freedom of religion.
1680 - The dividing line between his property and that of Daniel Ferguson was laid out by
referees.
1683 - He and wife fined for talking against the government.
1686 - Removed to Maine.
1686 - Prosecuted in Maine for getting Indians drunk.
1690 - In King William's War he withdrew to Newcastle.
1694 - William's will was dated August 27, 1694.
1695 - William apparently dies.
1695 - The widow Christian Furbush, ±43, was subpoenaed as witness with others of
Newcastle, she had watched in Robert White's sickness.
1695 - It is noted that his will is missing.
1701 - March 21 an agreement regarding his estate is made. It provided that Daniel have the
homestead and pay ‘any thirds that may appear due' but if any part of it should be recovered by
William Wittum, all should share the loss. Bethia Furbush to have her portion, Enoch Hutchins
to have the land at Spruce Creek already in possession The outlands to be divided by Andrew
Neal, Tho. Thompson, John and William Furbush, John to be William's guardian.
1722 His will is brought into court August 2, 1722, it was disallowed because the estate had been
distributed by an agreement of the heirs dated 21 Mar. 1701.
