Notes for Osker Clark Hussey
According to Leggitt family lore, when Osker was 9 years old his father was gone on a cattle drive. (Mother had died.) Some Indians came. He took the other kids and hid in a cave. An Indian woman followed their footsteps and found them and took them back to the cabin. Grandpa Hussey had a big round grind rock. The Indians made Osker get on the seat and sharpen every brave's knife. All the time they were poking him with the point of their knives. When all the knives were sharpened, the Indians took all the coffee, flour, meal, sugar, etc. and left. Osker found some meal they missed and made the kids mush. A cattle drive came by and he stole a bucket of syrup. After that he made hot cakes called cornpone to eat with the syrup until his father came back.
Uncle Osker and Uncle Brown were in a saloon when Carrie Nations came in with two men. The men held guns on the owner and patrons while she destroyed everything behind the bar. They said she was the most beautiful woman they'd ever seen.
