Granddaughter of Jesse Williams and Elizabeth Avery, his wife; Denison Smith and Waity Smith,
his wife.
Gr.-granddaughter of Ebenezer Avery and Elizabeth Green, his wife; Oliver Smith and Mary
Noyes Denison, his wife.
Gr.-gr.-granddaughter of Parke Avery and Mary Lathan, his wife.
Ebenezer Avery turned out at the New Haven Alarm in Capt. John Williams' company. He served
in the defense of Fort Griswold, where he was severely wounded. His house, at the foot of the
Heights, was where the wounded and dying were taken. He died in 1828 at Groton, where he
was born in 1747.
Park Avery served on the Committee of Inspection and as a member of the Assembly. His six sons
were in the army and two were killed at Fort Griswold. He died at Groton in 1796, aged
eighty-six.

Oliver Smith entered the service in 1775, and was captain of a company when the British ship
“Rose” bombarded Stonington. He commanded a regiment in the New York campaign.

Granddaughter of George McKinstry and Susan McKinstry, his wife; Elihu Avery and Hannah
West, his wife.
Gr.-granddaughter of John McKinstry and Elizabeth Knox, his wife; Elihu Avery and Thankful
Avery, his wife.
John McKinstry, (1745-1822), was at the battle of Bunker Hill and was taken prisoner at “The
Cedars.” He was bound to a stake but on account of being a mason was released by [p.239] the
Indian chief, Brandt. He served during the war and died at Livingston, N. Y.
Elihu Avery, (1755-79), served as corporal, 1775, of the Sixth Regiment and, 1776, was with the
main army in New York. His brother Ebenezer and the brothers of his wife, Daniel and Solomon
Avery, were killed at Fort Griswold, where seventeen of the family and name were in the battle.
